Nineteen year old Justin Carter is sitting behind bars. He has been there since February. He sits with a $500,000 bail, when murderers have been known to get out on far less. He has done nothing wrong. Well, sort of.
His only crime? A sarcastic (and incredibly STUPID) comment he posted on Facebook. In an argument Carter was having with a fellow gamer over the online game “League of Legends”, one user said something along the lines of “Oh, you’re insane. You’re crazy. You’re messed up in the head.”. Carters response landed him at the center of a police investigation, and locked behind bars.
“Oh yeah, I’m real messed up in the head. I’m going to go shoot up a school full of kids and eat their still-beating hearts.”.
Now I will be the first to say that this is one of the dumbest and most insensitive things a person could ever say. This is not something that should ever be uttered out of a persons mouth – BUT as stupid as it is, to me at lest, the level of sarcasm is completely obvious. Locking this guy up is absolutely ridiculous.
Now I understand he police doing a full investigation. After all, you never know, but according to CNN, a search warrant issued uncovered nothing suspicious, no weapons or other items suggesting that Justin Carter was in any way series over his stupid remark.
I say investigate (which they did) then keep a close eye on this kid for a while just to be safe, but locking the kid up for potentially several years is totally extreme and something I would not expect from a developed nation with freedom of speech built right into its constitution.
Unless there is more to this story that we don’t know about, this is ridiculous.
