As of yesterday the Nuclear disaster in Japan has been upgraded to a 7/7, on par with Chernobyl. It is important to note however, that the radiation released (so far) is not believed to be even close to that of the Ukrainian disaster.
According to CNN, Chernobyl saw a release of 5,200,000 terabequerels of radioactive iodine-131. To compare, Japan has seen a release of 630,000 terabecquerels. So while the total release (so far) is much less, it does put them both at a 7/7 on the INES scale. A 7/7 is defined as:
Level 7 is: “A major release of radioactive material with widespread health and environmental effects requiring implementation of planned and extended countermeasures,” according to the IAEA.
A friend of mine who did not site her source, said she read that IF there was a total meltdown, the level of radiation dumped into the ocean could render the Pacific Ocean as off limits for recreation and food for as long as 25 years. I have no idea if this is at all credible, but if I find any information for or against this statement I will post it. If any readers out there have seen this, please let me know and I will post info on it. I for one have to say I am not sure I believe it would be this severe, but who knows.
After the third blast at the Daiichi nuclear plant, Japans Prime Minister admits today that the radiation levels at the plant have reached levels that can “Impact Human Health”.
Officials are saying that Canada and the US is safe from the Radiation from the Japanese Nuclear Power Plants. But are we? I sure hope so.
I have to put some trust in the government about claims that we do not need to worry about Radiation here in North America, but I also have to wonder how honest this really is. If we were in real danger, would they actually tell us? I would hope they would, BUT, it could cause mass panic – and considering that we may very well be okay, why risk all that panic?
I for one think we should be given the whole truth on this Radiation – perhaps we already are, but how would we really know?
I understand that so far the levels of leaked radiation are relatively low (according to various news reports). I also do believe, that much of this radiation will dissipate as it crosses the Pacific, quite possibly to zero before it reaches Canada & the US, BUT I can’t be sure – I don’t think anyone can be sure.
My cupboards are stocked, and we have plenty of bottled water. I am not sure it will do any good, but at least knowing my family can spend several days without having to leave the house offers a little bit of comfort.
I truly hope we can trust our government on this issue with Radiation, I am not convinced, but what other choice do I have?
So what are your thoughts on what the Government is saying?
I must say I am extremely impressed with the calm and orderly nature of the people of Japan. I have not heard or read of a single story of looting or violence. I have a hard time imagining any other place on earth where the people would be this civilized after such a horrendous disaster.
I can only hope that if we are ever hit with such an earthquake and disaster here on the west coast of Canada that people would act in a similar fashion and model after the Japanese people.
Other Japanese Earthquake / Tsunami / Nuclear Posts:
I recently posted this chart on the site after finding it circulating the internet. Many thanks to “Nem” Who left a comment with a link to Snokes confirming that it is infact FAKE.
This is great news that it is fake as it had me, and I am sure many others worried.
I am still unsure what the real risk is for all of us here in North America – Just because this chart is fake, does not necessarily mean there is no risk, but regardless, it is a bit of a relief to know this image can not be trusted. Read the rest of this entry »
So from the sounds of it, if we are to trust the mass media and the information fed to them by politicians, Canada and the US are in little to no danger due to Nuclear Fallout. That said, I personally believe that they would say this anyways to prevent people from panicking – something that will likely happen any way in the event of a full meltdown.
More recent reports are indicating that a full meltdown is highly unlikely. Again, I am not sure how true this is, but I sure hope it is. Read the rest of this entry »
Here we have a looming threat of a Nuclear meltdown in Japan, but so far NONE of the news stations are saying what will happen to the West Coast of Canada and the US should this meltdown occur.
If there is a meltdown, there is a strong possibility that the jet-stream will carry Nuclear fallout over to the West Coast, however, nobody is covering this worst case scenario and what it means to us. How much radiation is likely to reach Canada and the US if this happens, and what, if anything, can we do to prepare for it? Are we doomed, or will we simply have minor problems that will pass?
I think it is highly irresponsible for the news stations to not cover this possibility – If there is anything I can do to prepare, I want to do it, I don’t want to be scrambling last minute with some warning hours before we are effected. They have had days to prepare us for anything, yet we know nothing!
UPDATE: It has been brought to my attention that thankfully this image is a fake! Thanks so much Nem for finding this and letting me know! Here is the link confirming it as a fake over at Snopes!
If I learn anything I will post it here – I urge you to comment as well should you find any good links, or see any good video that covers what we should do to prepare for the worst.
