Fires and Hurricanes, Yet We Still Rebuild

First off let me say I do feel sympathy for the many people who have lost their homes to fire down in California. The same sympathy goes out to those who were flooded out during Katrina. But I have to say, I simply don’t understand these people.

The fires in California recur year after year, and yet people still rebuild, knowing the risk they are taking. Sure, it would be very sad to lose your home to fire, but I would think that’s the risk you take when you build in an area so susceptible to it.

When it comes to New Orleans, it’s a similar situation. The area is prone to hurricanes and flooding, and at least from what I have seen on the news, etc, everyone says that this will happen again – and again. Global warming is giving us stronger weather patterns that will make this kind of thing keep coming back. So why rebuild there? Why not relocate to a safer place less likely to be destroyed in the near future?

I get that it’s home and all that, and to be perfectly honest, I just may do the same thing, but just because I would do the same thing does not help me to understand. What is with us as a species.

All this brings back a memory I have from about 10 years ago. There was a huge wasp’s nest in our garden. Rather than use chemicals to kill them off, I stood my distance and blasted the hive to bits with the garden hose. A few days or so later, the hive was back, and once again I destroyed it. They rebuild yet a third time. Determined, I turned on the water and flooded them out once again. After that third time, they never came back – they moved on and found a new place to build. Perhaps we humans need to learn from the wasps.

(With all that in mind, I am guessing the wasps moved to someone else’s yard only to be “raided” out by someone less compassionate than myself. Oh well)

I Blame Google

I spend most of my life sitting in front of my computer. Part of the time it is out of choice, (checking emails, posting photos, all that kind of stuff), but most of the time it’s for work. I sit at my desk for nearly 40 hours a week working,

This is all fine, it’s a part of life – I don’t have a problem with it. I like my job and enjoy what I do. Sure I would rather be at the beach, but wouldn’t everyone? But even though I enjoy my job, I absolutely love it when I can walk away and spend a bunch of time far far away from my computer.

One thing about my job that I find is that I just cant stop thinking about it. When I’m on holidays, or even just having some “me” time on the weekends with the thoughts of work buried away in the depths of my brain, something always comes up that makes me think of work again.

This past weekend Lyndsay, Emma and I, spent a few nights over on the West Coast in Tofino. Three nights with no television, radio, or internet – just the three of us in an ocean front cabin with no plans other then relaxation.

I had no intent of thinking about work for the whole time. I flipped open my new discover magazine, and what should I see? A page devoted to Larry and Sergey, the founders of Google. (Page 47, December 2008 Issue) Seeing their picture and the word “Google’ suddenly made me start thinking about work, my clients, my desk, and all the extra email that would be waiting for me when I returned to my desk on Monday morning.

Again I like my job, but I have to say having thoughts of work shooting through my brain when on vacation is still rather annoying. I blame Google. If only there were a way to leave work and erase it from my brain at 5:00 every evening not to think about it till 9 the next morning. Do they make a pill for that?

Daylight Savings Explained

It is just about that time again. For many of us in around the world the clocks will go back an hour on Sunday November 2nd at 2:00am, giving us that much needed extra hour of weekend sleep.

Daylight savings time (DST) has been around for a while now – far beyond my lifetime, but do you know the history behind it?

When do we set our clocks?
DST begins on the second Sunday in March when we set our clocks ahead 1 hour. Clocks are then set back an hour on the first Sunday in November. These dates changed in March of 2007.

Why was daylight savings created and when did it start?
If we want to get technical, daylight savings started, in various forms, back with ancient civilizations. At one time the daylight hours were divided up into 12 equal portions. This resulted in longer hours in the summer and shorter hours in the winter.

DST as we know it today, started at different times in different countries, but for the most part happened around the turn of the 20th century. During World War I, a scarcity of resources resulted in Germany instituting the first daylight saving laws in 1915. This reduced the number of hours after dark that people stayed up before bed, and reduced the strain on fuel sources.

Canada was one of the many countries to follow suit and adopted the policy back in 1917. The US followed shortly after in 1918. Canada was the first jurisdiction in North America to adopt the policy.

Where is daylight savings time used?
Many countries all around the world use DST, however, the majority of these are located in the northern hemisphere, and almost all of North America practices with the exception of a few pockets. From a population standpoint, the total number of people who follow daylight savings are in the minority on a global scale.

Daylight savings misconception…
I had to add this as I saw a post on FailBlog that cracked me up. It is well worth taking a quick look for a laugh.

Perhaps this guy, Chris Hill, needs to be taxed!

What Time Does Evening Start?

Lyndsay and I were having a discussion – what time does evening start? I say 6:00, she says 5:00. What do you think? UPDATE: Take our Poll to the right!!

I tried finding an answer online and came up with a 50/50 split between these times from various sources… can’t seem to find an official answer. Some crazies think it starts at 8… others 4. I think they are far wrong – must be either 5 or 6. Maybe we’ll just split the difference.

What are your thoughts? Vote or comment and let us know. I think I’ll lose sleep on this one.

Hmm.. Breast Milk Ice Cream??

I have to say that PETA’s stance on urging Ben and Jerry’s to use human breast milk as a replacement for cow’s milk in their ice cream is just disgusting. While I am confident that this is something that will never happen, should some how this become a reality, I will switch exclusively to Haagen Dazs. No more “half baked” for me. (sigh)

Now first off, I want to note that perhaps human breast milk would be the more natural choice, after all, that’s what most of us start off living on, and in some aspects, consuming cows milk seems strange – but our lifestyles and culture evolve around drinking and eating cows milk based products, so it just seems normal – after all, we’ve been doing it for centuries.

One of the biggest questions on my mind is however, if Peta finds milking cows to be in-humane what would the millions upon millions of women who then need to be “milked” think if man kind made the switch in their dairy sources… seems to me that milking women for mass production dairy is less humane then milking cows…

Time to Tax the Stupid

I am sick and tired of stupid people. They’re everywhere, doing stupid things, and just plain driving me crazy. When I say “stupid people” I am talking about those who do stupid things that defy common sense.

The most common place where stupid rein is on the roads. How did these people get their license? That bright red octagon with that 4 letter word “stop” means, when you get to the line, you need to stop – duh. It doesn’t mean stop behind the car in front of you, then when they go, just follow them through the intersection. And parking lots – they have those little white lines for a reason – park *between* them, not on, over, or diagonally across them.

I could go on for pages and pages with stories about stupid people, but there is an easy
out – use your common sense – is it really too much to ask?

So what can we do? Lets get a new “stupid tax”. When people do stupid things that step outside the bounds of intelligent, tax them! We’d pay off the national debt in no time!
