So from the sounds of it, if we are to trust the mass media and the information fed to them by politicians, Canada and the US are in little to no danger due to Nuclear Fallout. That said, I personally believe that they would say this anyways to prevent people from panicking โ something that will likely happen any way in the event of a full meltdown.
More recent reports are indicating that a full meltdown is highly unlikely. Again, I am not sure how true this is, but I sure hope it is.
So what happens IF the radiation does make it this far? I am still having a difficult time finding any reliable information about this, and what we could expect. I did dig up a bit of info on Radiation Sickness.
Radiation Sickness Side Effects
Letโs assume the worst, and high levels of radiation travel with the Jet Stream and make their way over to North America. What are the side effects of this Radiation? How bad would it really be? Here are some of those side effects that I found listed at WrongDiagnosis. (Not sure how reliable the source is)
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Weight Loss
- Loss of Appetite
- Weakness
- Red itchy skin
- Sore mouth
- Sore throat
- Hair loss
- Recurrent infections
- Bleeding
- Anemia
I am pretty sure these symptoms apply to someone getting radiation treatment, not sure if they would be the same, or more severe in a “fallout” type scenario.
Again, if anyone out there has some good sources of good information, or sees a correction that should be made here PLEASE leave a comment or contact me and I will correct it. I am NOT an expert in any way and I donโt claim to be, so please help me make this accurate.
Other Japanese Earthquake / Tsunami / Nuclear Posts:
Just a thought. Im no expert, but what about the earth’s daily cycle. Would that not mean that the radiation lingering in the air and atmosphere would be over North America as Japans latitude is the same as places in North America? What if there is rain and snow? Would that not bring the radiation down in those parts of North America?
Yeah I totally agree were never going to get the truth
From the media, and its ridiculous not all of us are mindless idiots, radiation is something that lasts for YEARS there’s no way around it and humanity will never learn to not fuck with it, after all the nuclear disasters the world has had they still crave it for the paper that comes from it.. It’s pathetic and the world will suffer for money hungry robots.
I too am having problems finding valuable information on what Americans and Canadians can do to protect ourselves! According to the Canadian Government, we’ve got nothing to worry about:
Nuclear Radiation from Japan Poses Health Risk
PublicSafety.gc.ca
However for those of us not wanting a veiled depiction of what’s ACTUALLY happening, check out this site and all the links/videos:
Japan Fukushima Radiation
Tom Adams an energy expert and Director on the board of the government’s Ontario Independent Electricity Market Operator, 1999-2001, and the Association of Major Power Consumers in Ontario, 2007 has some very valuable knowledge.
He said the jet stream will carry radioactive contaminants from Japan and drag it all over Canada from British Columbia to the Maritimes.
i agree protect yourself and family , for the government won’t the jet stream is our enemy today. the japaneese gov is not totaly truthfull , they do not want mass panic
and how convenient for those elitists that such a massive naturally-started disaster could wipe out 3/4 of the western world! now they can toss out all their plans and legislations for population control… nature, and a nuclear plant, took care of it for them. when we are all panicking, not knowing who to trust and which source to believe and what to do and how to stay safe, and if our family and friends are even still alive… the elitists will be smoking cigars and toasting their glasses.
Ok. I really don’t think we in the Pacific Northwest need to take those potassium iodide pills. There are sooo many people who need them more urgently than us.
I lived in Europe during Chernobyl. Pretty close. We got no pills and no cancer.
Ok. This might be an “I got beaten as a kid and I turned out ok”argument – but I just looked at a world map.
Ok. Maybe I just don’t have to take precautions anymore. I won’t.
I mostly agree with you. I think the potassium iodide pills will not likely be needed here. In the event of a full meltdown, and if the jetstream happens to be at the right place at the right time, we may be at a greater risk (based on the things some people are saying). I for one am a little worried, but I am also not flocking to get pills either. I may be a bit worried, but I am not losing sleep over it either.
It would be nice if we knew if we could trust the governments though. They say one thing, but we really have no way of knowing how true it is.
P.S. Glad you didn’t get cancer! ๐
Ha! So far so good. ๐
I fully agree with your mistrust in our government.
I don’t think a lot of people are truly comforted by any statements they make. I mean who trusts governments anymore?
heres a thought they talk about radiation as if only one plant is omitting it, but there is problems with six ,dose that not make it 6 times worse ?
yes, that’s a good point – how much worse IS it with multiple sources???
Japan just declared it a level 5, which is equal to the Three Mile Island nuclear disaster. Chernobyl was 7…. but this situation has not ended yet. The last two posters were right about the fact that it’s not just ONE potential meltdown… it’s 6, and 4 are in imminent danger of it as we speak! They’re just barely controlling the situation. Imagine in another week how much higher this situation will escalate if it continues like this…
Hi Jill,
Yes, I saw this also, just moments before you commented! Here is the report at CNN on this:
Japanese nuclear crisis on par with 3 Mile Island
For Canadians who feel that proactive measures would eliminate some of their anxieties regarding the possibility of beign exposed to radioactive fallout, I suggest that they take great caution if they are considering the consumption of potassium iodine. Iodine can cause severe anaphylactic reactions including respiratory failure.
If you have ever had an X-ray procedure whereby a substance was injected and then followed my imaging equipment, it may come as a suprise to you that iodine is a component within that injected chemical.
It is for this reason that patients are asked if they are allergic to shell fish……fish that have a high concentration of iodine and a cue to a radiologist that an anaphylactic reaction could produce a very high-risk outcome.
In Wellness….Nightingale
Very good point Nightingale, and I have to agree with you entirely. Taking these pills without being advised by a doctor, or knowing your allergies etc etc could actually do more damage than the radiation in some cases…
As someone who has gotten a healthy dose of Chernobyl radiation, this sounds all too familiar. I live in Vancouver these days, which is many, many times farther than I lived from Chernobyl when it went off, but I don’t underestimate the power of panic nor the need to cover up the facts.
I recall fist fights breaking out in grocery stores and public market when someone would show up with a Geiger counter. Apparently everyone felt their merchandise was safe to sell, but not safe to be measured in front of customers or TV cameras
I don’t think we’re quite that far out here, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I heard something like that soon.
radiation in waters off bc coast/ not dangerouse for humans but what about small fish/plancton and so on in the food chain , sooner or later we shall end up eating theese no?
I think we have all the rights to be worried. We dont know if the government is telling us the truth of whether we are indeed safe. Theres only one thing that I have to say though … That the world is gonna end soon.. Think about it what happens if the workers could not manage to control the situation then what happens? all the radiation flies off to places to places and soon for all we know its everywhere even on our foods etc. Even if say, they actually controlled the situation, what happens to the radiation that has already been released it does not just disappear out of mid-air, of course it stays there then who knows what will happen? I dont think there is a way to get that radiation outta’ there. Im just hoping for the best.. I’m praying to God it will be put to end because as long as this problem goes on I would never obtain a piece of mind.
well I dont know about others but we went to Rockaway beach about the end of june first of july and my partner a week after started developing red spots on her body they start to fade and she goes outside they come back only moreso they dont itch but now she looks like she has the measles and they arent going away and the doctor doesnt have a clue
Bev: If your doctor was concerned about radiation exposure, they would have regularly sent blood tests off to check your partner’s white cell count and other numbers. See http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/radiation-sickness/DS00432/DSECTION=tests-and-diagnosis for more information.
I’d also do a search for [rockaway beach health] to try to correlate your partner’s symptoms with known problems in the area (such as industrial waste dumping and what-not).
I’m not surprised this post appeared as soon as it did after the Fukushima disaster. News agencies worldwide were unnecessarily spreading fear and panic in order to sell their stories. Yet, radiation levels in Japan have been dropping steadily since, and all over the rest of the globe have always been well within safe limits.
To this day, no one has been verified to have died of exposure to radiation from the reactors in Fukushima. Zero.
Scott: If you’re interested in seeing some data on detecting radiation levels, see the link I provided, or check a Web search for [radiation sickness testing] to see what other health authorities (not blogs, though) say.
Cheers, and long life!
